The American tire industry is ready to “sustainably” replace American tires with Chinese ones, according to the country’s tire distributors.
In a statement issued Thursday, the American Tire and Rubber Association said that the group is committed to the “continued development of a global tire supply chain, including its production and distribution operations.”
The tire industry had said that it expected to meet demand for Chinese tires in the United States by 2025, with most of the demand coming from China.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that more than 3.6 billion Chinese tires are being produced every year, and that over 50% of them are made in China.
That’s about 10% of the world’s total tire production.
The industry’s decision to diversify away from U.s. tires comes after the White House in August announced that the United State would switch to a “Buy American” policy, which allows foreign tire manufacturers to import products made in the U, with a U.
