Many people are surprised to hear that many of the top repair shops are closed due to the recession.
“If you think about it, we have almost 100,000 people out there working in our community,” said Linda Jones, a business owner and owner of A.B. Jones and Associates, a tire repair shop in Dallas.
She says many of those people aren’t paying their own bills.
They’re not paying their insurance, and they don’t have the credit cards they need to pay their bills.
“They are the ones who have the money to do it themselves,” Jones said.
And, as the economy has recovered, so have repair jobs.
“The recovery in the economy is so much better, and that’s really where it’s going,” she said.
Jones said she believes a lot of the people who repair flat tires are just waiting for the right time to make the call.
“I’ve seen it with a lot, like, three or four times in a day,” Jones added.
“People are not paying themselves, and there’s a lot that’s going on.”
The downturn is especially pronounced in areas like Austin, Texas, where the economy and job growth are strong.
Jones says a lot more people have access to the internet, so they are less reliant on their phone.
And she says the recession has hurt her business because the number of people she has to accommodate to repair flats has gone up.
“It’s like you have a whole bunch of people who are out there who are going to pay a flat tire, and you don’t know what to do with them,” she explained.
“And that’s a big problem.”
What’s the best time to get a flat-tire repair?
It’s important to remember that there are different factors that influence the timing of a repair.
For example, if a tire has a worn out tread that is causing a flat, then the repair may be faster to get that repaired.
Or, if the tread is completely flat, the repair could take longer.
But if a flat has not completely worn out, the time to fix the tire is usually much shorter.
“There’s a difference between what is an urgent problem and what is a routine repair,” Jones explained.
That means it’s not as important to get the tire fixed quickly if it’s an emergency.
Also, a repair might be quicker if it is the first time the vehicle has been used in several months.
“But if the tire has been sitting there for years, it’s kind of a different story,” Jones concluded.
If a tire is damaged and needs a flat repair, you might want to make sure you are not running the risk of getting a flat on a new tire.
And the repair can cost more than the tire will last.
“In a lot the same way you can get a new engine on a used car, you can do a tire replacement,” Jones stressed.
“You can get your car fixed much faster if you can make the repairs, and the costs are low.”
Jones says it’s important for customers to understand the risks and benefits of buying a new car or truck.
“A lot of times, people will think, ‘If it’s good enough for the last four years, why not go for a brand new one?’,” Jones noted.
“Not every customer will be in the same situation, and some people will be more comfortable with a brand-new car than a used one.
But a brand is better for you.”
In addition to the risks of buying new tires, Jones says many customers are also concerned about the repair.
“This is a common thing, people think, they’re getting a free service, they get the tires, they don (want to) replace them,” Jones warned.
“We don’t want them to think, because they don, they’ll get a cheap flat tire and the warranty is going to expire, so why would I pay more?”
That’s because the repair job can be more expensive.
And some customers will have a lot to lose.
If they decide to keep the car, they may not have enough money to pay the repair bill.
“So the whole point of having a flat is to get it fixed for a better price,” Jones advised.
“What you want to do is pay the insurance money, get your insurance renewed, get the paperwork in order, and go get it done.”
